Hey Nick! I really enjoyed your lesson about the Periodic Table and elements and your use of the flash card game (which I can not remember the name of...). The game translated really well into use with the periodic elements, and made for a fun game! I never understood how intricate the Periodic Table is in terms of grouping the elements by similarities, but your use of the card game made it very clear how complex and useful it is! The only suggestion I have would be to have given more time to explaining the game and goals. You and I have played the game before, but some of the others haven't. If I remember correctly, you didn't explain that we were supposed to make as many groupings as possible, or that we were supposed to report the groupings to you before moving on to the next grouping. By spending another minute or two to fully explain the rules and checking if anyone had any questions before handing out the cards and starting, you could have given the game more of a competitive feel. This would have allowed the groups to jump into the game more quickly. That said, you did an awesome job, and your lesson accomplished its goal! Great job!
I liked your idea of having students use different characteristics to classify elements in a hands-on approach. I especially liked your Sponge Prompt to get us thinking in the right mode; I think it was effective. You did a good job managing us, as well, in that you did not leave us totally stranded with the info but gave us just enough information to keep us in the right direction. If you were to use this lesson again, I would not have the element names printed in different colors. By the end it wasn’t clear to me why some were blue/orange/black, and it introduced another variable for us to categorize, but perhaps in a distracting way. Other than that, I think that you did a good job leading the end discussion; I think it was clear to the class what you wanted us to get out of the lesson. Nice job!
